Initial thoughts on Romans

As I read the book of Romans, I develop a rough sketch of what I think Paul considers as the themes of his writing. I will put them down in bulleted points for now and develop them further later.

  • Romans is about the gospel and an expanded discourse of what it means and how it is applicable and what the ramifications are.
  • It's about the condition of human beings under the righteous judgement of God and the faithfulness of God in fulfilling His promise of salvation through Christ.
  • Some Jews have rejected Christ and pursued the law as means for being justified. But it is not about salvation by works, it is just that they did not place their faith in Christ. Instead they placed their faith in the law as the means to be justified, not knowing or understanding that with the law, sin and death abounds, but with Christ, it's the fulfillment.
