Different Sets of Jews in Romans?

You who boast in the law dishonor God by breaking the law. 24 For, as it is written, “The name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

I think this verse above speaks of one category of Jews who boasted in having the law but did not follow it as they should. They were critisized by Paul because they did not practice what they taught.

Then, there was another category of Jews who pursued righteousness by obeying the law.

31 but that Israel who pursued a law that would lead to righteousness did not succeed in reaching that law. 32 Why? Because they did not pursue it by faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone,

I think differentiating these two categories of Jews in Romans is important in answering several questions relating to:

  • justification by faith
  • whether the first century Jews were working to gain rigtheousness
